     The Institute consists of two Sections taking part especially in the field of fundamental research.
MATERIALS RESEARCH SECTION
     Activities are aimed to develop the selected type of composite materials (CM) with metallic or ceramic matrix. The following materials are studied: CM reinforced with fibres (continuous and discontinuos), CM prepared by unidirec- tional solidification, CM with heterogeneous structure prepared by pressure in- filtration.

MACHINE MECHANICS SECTION
     Activities are directed to theoretical tasks in elastic and viscoelastic continua, theoretical and practical problems of noise and vibration control, problems of acoustoelasticity, dynamic analysis of machine aggregates, vibra- tional diagnosis of machines and operational fatigue endurance.

     The Institute has contacts and cooperation with a number of institutes and universities in Europe (Austria, Belgium, Belorussia, Bulgaria, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine).
